The name Pola is an abbreviation of a Bemba (Zambian tribe and language) word – Ku’Pola. Ku’Pola is a verb, which directly translated means to heal or to recover. It is the action of healing an active motion towards restoring, recovering, and sometimes reconstructing. This is the aim of Pola Psychology to create space(s) that support individuals to do the work of healing (Ku’Pola).
I started Pola Psychology in because it was the place I needed when I was looking for a therapist. I planned to be the kind of therapist that I wanted to see, someone competent in their discipline and also culturally responsive. Cultural responsively to me is about having an awareness of sociopolitical factors that have an impact on mental health and creating a safe space to explore the individual experience within the social context. – Nasalifya
